Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ)

This is probably the most widely used and certainly the most informative assessment tool provided by SHL. It relies on the assumption that the majority of healthy adults are able and willing – with a little help – to construct a realistic image of themselves. OPQ indicates the candidate’s perception of their preferred behavioural style at work and likely performance against important job competencies.

Details:

Computerised: A major advantage of OPQ is that it can be administered on a computer or online. The evaluation is also computer based as well as the generation of the report. If the test is administered in a traditional (paper-and-pencil) way then data can be entered by typing keying or scanning.
Fast: The report can be generated within a few minutes following test administration. This is especially important in situations where the selection procedure has serious time constraints.
Objectivity: Both the evaluation and interpretation of the test is algorithmic, therefore the results are fair and do not depend on the subjective judgement of any assessor.
Multiple languages: Reports can be generated in any language – or even in multiple languages – according to the needs of the client, regardless of the language in which the candidate took the test.
Modules: Reports can be tailor-made to the client’s needs, and contain only those sections that are necessary for any particular assessment.
Secondary scales: the computer expert system can draw conclusions on so-called „secondary scales”: dimensions relevant for a restricted range of jobs. Such dimensions include preferred team types, leadership style, reporting style, and management competencies.
Management competencies: This section of the report describes the candidate’s behaviour along the 16 dimensions of SHL’s Inventory of Management Competencies (IMC). The results can be made appropriate for managerial training sessions. If the results are interpreted in a selection context then it is expedient that the candidate’s previous performance, the impression obtained during the interview, and other relevant information are taken into account as well.
Preferred team type: According to the theory of British psychologist Meredith Belbin, teams need members to fulfil various roles in order for efficient functioning. Following Belbin, the report describes which roles the candidate prefers to fulfil. Most appropriate when building new teams, assigning new jobs, and for team building trainings.
Leadership / Reporting style: this scale describes which leadership or reporting style is likely to be typical of the candidate. This information is most appropriate when a leader with an already developed leadership style is looking for an employee, or when the characteristics of the job or the culture of the workplace determines the preferred leadership style.
